A perfect reflection of how typical Cheshire lifestyle should be, Wilmslow falls within the Tatton constituency, ranked the third most affluent in the UK after Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster. Its population is just over 30,000.
Wilmslow is located on the site of a highly significant Iron Age settlement. It is the setting for the annual Scarecrow Festival, held in the town centre. Eleven miles from Manchester city centre, the town benefits from excellent rail links in particular. Before the creation of the railway in 1842, Wilmslow was little more than a small hamlet. Today there is even an hourly service to London Euston.
A bastion of the Northwest’s wealth, the town is famous for its high number of famous residents, notably footballers, television actors and some of the region’s top businesspeople. These residents include Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and a number of his players, as well as a number of Coronation Street stars and business personality Peter Jones. However, perhaps Wilmslow’s most famous resident was Alan Turing, the man who invented the machine that cracked the German Enigma cypher during World War Two, and according to Time Magazine one of the 100 most important people of the twentieth century.
Part of the northwest’s “golden triangle”, Wilmslow has been an affluent haunt for the area’s wealthiest people since the Victorian era. This continues today; the town’s Aston Martin dealership is the busiest in the UK. Property prices in the town enjoy consistent year-on-year growth, representing one of the safest places to purchase real estate in the UK, though average prices are amongst the highest in the country.
Savills are currently marketing Bowden House, a sumptuous £4.5m mansion in Wilmslow that is set within private, mature grounds, offering an oasis of calm for a busy family. Newly built, the 8,000 sq. ft. property comprises five bedrooms, and is finished to the highest possible standards, with exceptional details from the oversized oak wood floors to the bespoke Jamie Robins kitchen. Special features include paddocks, stables, a new tennis court and an exceptional leisure suite. The property also has an Intecho Intelligent Homes system controlled by iPads for lighting, heating and audiovisual systems.
For those who prefer more traditional properties, Fine Country Estates currently offer a 6-bedroom Georgian estate set on eleven acres of land for £3.25m in nearby Handforth. The property abounds in unique features, including an orangery, cinema, gym, games room, swimming pool with Jacuzzi, office and gym. Each bedroom is well proportioned with en suite, and a beautiful Cheshire lake complements the mature gardens.
